Nalanda Mahavihara was one of the world’s earliest residential universities, drawing students from across Asia for about 800 years. Its red-brick monasteries and temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nalanda lies about 90 km from Patna and 12 km from Rajgir, so the two are usually visited together.

How to plan Nalanda
- Combine with Rajgir: Rajgir in the morning, Nalanda ruins and museum in the afternoon.
- Carry water and a cap – there is little shade inside the ruins.
- Students: school and college educational trips from Patna are very popular – ask operators for group rates.
